Use of drugs by BZU students growing: report

Multan:February 24:Use of drugs by students, especially of Fine Arts, of Multan’s Bahauddin Zakariya University is on the increase, reveals a secret inquiry to probe such reports. Sources told The News that in such a report the Special Branch had informed the Chief Minister about the development at the largest university in South Punjab, who subsequently directed the Punjab Higher Education Department (HED) to hold a secret inquiry into the same and submit a report accordingly.

Punjab University bids farewell to 1,454 graduates

LAHORE:February 23:As many as 1,454 degrees, medals and prizes were distributed among graduates at the Punjab University’s 125th convocation on Monday. A total of 126 PhD, 738 MPhil/MS, 238 master’s, 178 undergraduate degrees and 174 medals were awarded during the ceremony. Lahore:February 22:The fifth edition of Lahore Literary Festival (LLF) is all set to once again bring together literati from around the world on one platform. This year’s LLF is scheduled to be inaugurated on Friday with a keynote address by Zehra Nigah followed by historian Peter Frankopan, the author of The Silk Roads. The event will formally begin on Saturday and conclude on Sunday. The line-up of panelists includes eminent names from Pakistan as well as Lebanon, Syria, Indonesia, South Africa, Germany, the US and the UK.

LHC directed FPSC to conduct the CSS exams in Urdu

Lahore:February 22:The LHC has directed the FPSC to conduct the CSS exams in Urdu from 2018. This decision is a step taken to promote the national language, but there are some loopholes in the judgement. The question arises: Is this step taken to provide a chance to those who do not have enough capacity to master the English language and pass the CSS exam or is it to promote the Urdu language?

Mother Language Day observed

Lahore:February 22:International Mother Language Day was observed here by organising various events. The Punjab government announced awards for the promotion of mother language in the province. This day is observed around the globe on 21st of February each year. It was observed across the world and likewise in Pakistan with the theme ‘towards sustainable future through multilingual education’.

Medical college, teaching hospital to be set up in Punjab University

Lahore:February 21:Punjab Minister for Higher Education Syed Raza Ali Gillani on Monday said that a medical college and a 400-bed teaching hospital would be established at the Punjab University (PU). He was speaking at the 125th convocation of the PU in which a total of 1,454 degrees, medals and prizes were distributed. The minister announced that 10 buses would be provided to Punjab University on the demand of university administration and assured his full support for construction of five hostels and flats for teachers and employees at PU.

Tevta registers 32,541 Companies in one year

LAHORE:February 21: Technical Education and Vocational Training Authority (Tevta) has registered 32,541 companies on Skilled Labour Market Information System (SLMIS) during one year. The facility of free registration is available for all pass-outs of technical and vocational institutes of Tevta and employers as well on this job web portal so that unemployed skilled youths may find suitable job opportunities.

Training workshop University of Engineering water resources

LAHORE:February 21: A five-day training workshop “Application of GIS and Remote Sensing in Water Resources Management” organised by University of Engineering and Technology’s Centre of Excellence in Water Resources Engineering (CEWRE) started here on Monday. UET Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr Fazal Ahmad Khalid, speaking at the inaugural ceremony, said country’s economy depended on adequate and management of water resources with the help of modern techniques.

Govt orders security audit of educational institutions

Lahore:February 20:The Punjab government has asked departments to submit a security audit report after carrying out a review of educational institutions and ensure arrangements are up to the mark. According to a memo sent by the District Education Authority (DEA) to all district education officers (DEOs) as well as the district officers of special education and literacy, officials were asked to ensure security at all institutions. PU students shine in extracurricular competitions

Lahore:February 20:Students of the Punjab University grabbed prominent positions in inter-university competitions held at different universities campuses in Lahore. According to a statement issued on Sunday, in Performing Arts Festival 2017, organised at University College Lahore, PU’s band which included Muslim Shagan, Muhammad, Zaroon and Mohsin got the first position in ‘Battle of Band’ competition while in eastern and western singing competition, Ali Jan and Sumbal Hafeez clinched second positions.

Non-academic duties for teachers resented

Lahore:February 20:Punjab Teachers Union (PTU) leaders Sunday criticised the government for assigning non-academic assignments to schoolteachers saying these assignments were badly hampering academic activities in public schools. The PTU leaders including Sajjad Kazmi, Rana Liaqat, Jam Sadiq and others observed that schoolteachers across the Punjab province were busy in PEC examinations, marking of papers and census related training adding these were badly affecting teaching in public schools.The news.
