In Punjab 2 million needed to restore 92 schools

Lahore: According to an assessment plan primed by the Punjab Education Foundation (PEF), an amount of Rs 2 million is required to restore and re-functionalise each of the 92 PEF partner schools situated in flood-affected southern districts, which have been badly hit by the gushing waters, PEF Managing Director Mohyuddin Ahmad Wani said on Tuesday.

Briefing a three-member delegation of a telecom company, he said the amount is estimated for the construction of a school with four classrooms, principal's office, toilets and the necessary furniture for students. According to a presentation about the flood assessment conducted by the PEF, out of 92 affected schools, 64 are Foundation Assisted Schools while 28 are registered under the New School Programme. Currently, the PEF is partnered with 1,776 schools in 29 districts under the FAS programme and 129 schools in eight districts for the New School Programme. He said that out of more than 800,000 students enrolled under the FAS programme, 52 percent were female. Wani said that most of the affected schools were situated in the districts of Bhakkar, Dera Ghazi Khan, Jhang and Layyah, while the survey of badly-hit tehsils of Rajanpur had not yet been held due to deluge. "The PEF is going to launch a comprehensive flood assessment survey after the Eid holidays," he said. Daily times
