Plagiarism issue: UVAS software accessible to its faculty, students

Lahore: University of Veterinary and Animal Sciences Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr Muhammad Nawaz has stressed that ensuring quality, credibility and recognition of research work in veterinary education is crucial to keep pace with the global advancement.

To achieve the target, he said, the software to detect plagiarism has been made accessible to the faculty as well as graduate and postgraduate students.

"The anti-plagiarism software access is playing a pivotal role against the cut and paste culture in academic research," he said.

The vice chancellor was speaking at a ceremony organised to celebrate the institute's success story.

Prof Nawaz said the UVAS was ranked third top university in terms of research in the Punjab capital after the oldest seats of learning, the Government College University and the Punjab University. "The research culture will further flourish at UVAS with open access to the anti-plagiarism software to faculty as well as students," he added.

He acknowledged the varsity faculty members' scholarship and dedication for writing research papers and contributing 101 research papers in peer-reviewed journals indexed by Thomas-Reuters, lSI Web of Knowledge in 2009. Being a professional university, Prof Nawaz said, the UVAS had attained 12th position in the ranking among 82 public- and private-sector universities across the country.

In order to improve academic side, Prof Nawaz stressed that a comprehensive strategy should be devised to monitor attendance, appropriate lecture delivery, quality of question papers and transparent examination system. Then, he said, the UVAS could be able to earn the title of the Best University in South Asia.

Referring to massive financial cut in the grant by the Higher Education Commission and the Punjab government, he stressed that the faculty members should explore public-private partnership avenues to generate income.

Saying that internship is a practical training which must be made mandatory for students in all departments, the vice chancellor lauded Prof Dr Nasim Ahmad for successfully organising DVM final-year student's internship programme 2010.. Dawn
