Rahim Yar Khan is one of the modern district headquarter cities in Punjab. Although the city seems a far off place to those living in Lahore, Rawalpindi or Islamabad, but the city has very good civic facilities. It is situated on the main Railway line and on main national highway linking Karachi & Lahore and is connected with rest of Pakistan by air, rail and road and all types of telecommunication links are available.
Al-Nayhan Family, the ruling family of Abu Dhabi has undertaken a large number of welfare projects including Sheikh Zayed Hospital Complex, Sheikh Zayed Public College, and school. Police Rehabilitation Centre, Air port has been built with monetary help of the Royal Family. It is 4th largest airport of the country.
The people who have not visited R. Y. Khan think that this is a desert city but it is pertinent to point out that it is surrounded by lush green agricultural land and there are vast stretches of miles of gardens of mangoes and canals run through this area.
Vast stretches of Cholistan Desert around some areas of Rahim Yar Khan cast there mesmerizing effects on the mind of the people during the night when the moon is in full bloom.
On the east of the city is desert landscape with rich
preserved wild life and on the west river Indus flows to its destiny Arabian Sea. This District comprises of four Tehsils with an estimated population of 41 lacks and area of 11880 sq. kilometers.
The district has rich cultural heritage. The fort Drawar, which is a world renowned tourist attraction site, is at one hour drive from Rahim Yar Khan. Another historical attractive site, Patan Minar, which was built in the time of King Ashok is also near
Rahim Yar Khan. World renowned Bhong Mosque, Abu Dhabi palace and Salluwali wild life farm are worth seeing places.
The city has good educational facilities in public and private sector and Sheikh Zayed Medical College is the latest addition to these.
