LAHORE:January 28:THE reappointment of Prof Dr Mujahid Kamran as Punjab University vice-chancellor has been challenged in the Lahore High Court.
Prof Dr Yousaf Hayat, a contender for the slot, filed a petition which stated that the reappointment of Kamran was not only a violation of the Punjab University Act but also violation of a Supreme Court judgment against reemployment of retired persons. He said the respondent had already completed his term as VC. He said the Punjab government, by reappointing Kamran as PU VC, also deprived eligible candidates of their lawful right. He urged the court to take notice of the ‘illegality’ and set aside the appointment.
report sought: The Lahore High Court on Friday sought report from Punjab chief secretary on a contempt of court petition filed by a girl seeking a vehicle under the Punjab Chief Minister’s Yellow Cab Scheme.
Justice Muhammad Khalid Mahmood Khan had directed the chief secretary to look into the matter and decide petitioner’s application in accordance with law within two weeks. A master’s degree holder girl, Hina Eithisham, had contended that the chief secretary had not yet decided her application. She had alleged political discrimination in the yellow cab scheme.
She pleaded that she applied for the provision of a cab after fulfilling all requirements set by the government. But, she said, her application was subjected to discrimination for being a daughter of a PPP activist.
She prayed the court to initiate contempt proceeding against the chief secretary and direct him to give her a cab being an eligible applicant. Justice Khan directed the chief secretary to file report on the petition within 10 days.
convicted: Additional District and Sessions Judge Nadeem Shaukat on Friday awarded life imprisonment to a drug peddler namely Zubair Muhammad nominated in two narcotics cases.
The court has also imposed a fine of Rs. Rs 100,000 on the convict.
Mughalpura Police had arrested Zubair Muhammad and seized 17 kilograms of hashish from his possession. The police had lodged two different FIRs against him under Section 9-C of the CNSA-1997.
On Friday, the court after hearing final arguments of both parties convicted Zubair. The convict will face further jail term in case of non-payment of the fine. research centre: The Lahore High Court chief justice on Friday inaugurated a research centre in the Judges Library Hall for the capacity building of judges.
According to a press release issued by the LHC, Justice Mansoor Ali Shah, being in charge of the IT branch, had been assigned the task to supervise the project while Sessions Judge Javed Rasheed Mehboobi will assist him.
For this capacity-building initiative, five highly qualified judges have been selected from the lower judiciary of Punjab. They have been appointed as research associates by Chief Justice Sheikh Azmat Saeed.
To improve the quality of judgments by judges, the Centre has been equipped with the latest facilities like internet, e-mal and fax. In addition to the judges working at Principal Seat, judges holding court at its benches in Rawalpindi, Bahawalpur and Multan will also benefit from this facility. The research associates will promptly supply information to queries of their lordships regarding legal questions sent through e-mail, internet, fax or ordinary mode.
The books have also been catalogued topic wise in order to avoid inconvenience in finding books to the judges visiting the library.The news.
