LUMUN 2012 – Delegates maintain a high level of excitement

Lahore: 13 Jan: Lahore University of Management Sciences (LUMS) Lahore has announced that The second day of LUMUN 2012 marked the beginning of the committee sessions. The debate began at 9 am and continued in full swing till 5 pm. All the seventeen committees had a very high attendance, unsurprisingly. The topics of debate ranged from discussing flood relief issues, to refugee camps, to Global Zero and nuclear disarmament. The committee chairs were pleasantly amazed with the ideas exchanged at the debates.
As the sessions concluded, the delegates moved to the first in-conference event of LUMUN 2012; a panel discussion on ‘Moving towards sustainable development’. The panel had environmentalists, social activists, and economic experts of the field who proposed solutions and suggestions to promote the cause of sustainable development to an enthusiastic audience of hundreds of delegates, all of whom were eager to learn and play some part towards preserving the energy resources of the country, and the world around us.
After a day of intense debate and productive discussions, the delegates got a chance to unwind at a concert by popular singer, Ali Azmat (former member of the famous musical band Junoon). The excitement level was unparalleled as Ali took the crowd with his undeniably energetic stage presence.
In short, the LUMUN 2012 conference went a level further on its second day and hopefully will be improved upon in years to come.
The third day of the conference began with committee sessions and all committees proceeded smoothly with their respective debates. The sessions got adjourned at 1 pm following which the delegates proceeded to the Social Responsibility Events planned by the Social Responsibility Programme (SRP) of LUMUN (initiated in 2009). The plantation drive and the collaborative event with the World Wildlife Fund set the benchmark for social responsibility activities for all students at LUMUN organised events across Asia.
Following SRP events was LUMUN's most significant international collaboration with Global Zero, a nonprofit, nonpartisan international movement for elimination of nuclear weapons worldwide. The video conference with Ambassador Richard Burt, US Chair of Global Zero went perfectly with the overall mood of the conference and stood out amongst all the in-conference events. In addition, the United States Education Foundation (USEF) panel discussion also deserves a special mention. Hina Rabbani, LUMS alumna and Federal Minister for Foreign Affairs was amongst the panel who gave presentations on Fulbright Scholarships and studying in America. Students from across Pakistan found this session to be of immense help and the same can be said about the USEF stall which is always crowded with delegates. The third day of the conference proved be very exciting and productive for all participants.
