Lahore:23 September:The Lahore University of Management Sciences (LUMS) has a different admission process. Instead of buying an admission form or a prospectus, one has to download a form from university’s website for free and deposit processing fee while submitting the form. Processing fee ranges from Rs 3,000 to Rs 5,000 for different undergraduate and masters programmes.
Students and their parents complain about high prices of prospectuses and urge the authorities concerned to take steps to bring them down.
Parents say the Higher Education Department should introduce such a mechanism, which binds educational institutions to sell admission forms and prospectuses at a uniform price.
Adnan, an 18-year-old student who has applied for admission to a graduate programme in a private and public university, said problems multiplied when one applied for multiple programmes in different institutions.
Adnan told Daily Times that admission process of public sector institutions was relatively affordable. He blamed the Punjab government for doing “nothing” to provide relief to thousands of students and their parents.
Another student, Maira, said the negligence of Higher Education Department was evident from the fact that public educational institutions had different prices for the same study programme. Khalid, a parent, said that in western countries prospectuses were usually available free of cost and admission forms were available online.
“Besides, if any university charges admission fee, it returns the same to students after they get admission,” he added.
Punjab Higher Education Secretary Ijaz Munir could not be reached for comment.Daily Times.
