LAHORE:A NUMBER of activists of the Islami Jamiat Talaba (IJT) allegedly attacked some boarding students of the Punjab University in Hostel No 7 and injured them in the wee hours of Sunday.
They also manhandled superintendent hostel Shahid Gull who was also an assistant professor at Department of Philosophy while according to PU spokesman, assistant superintendent and a teacher at Zoology Department, Hassan Siddiqi, security guard Mumtaz and students Muhammad Shahid, Hafiz Shahrukh, Kashif and Ghulam Ishaq of Philosophy Department were also injured in the incident.
A PU press statement issued on Sunday said that groups of armed miscreants belonging to the Islami Jamiat Talaba raided the Punjab University Hostel No 7. While entering the hostel area through gate number 4, the miscreants reported to the security guards that they were going to participate in a “Dars-e-Quran”. After entering Hostel No 7, their true designs came to light when they assaulted a number of rooms of the hostel and opened fire.
When the university security force appeared on the scene along with hostel administration, including superintendent and hall area president, the miscreants managed to flee by jumping over the boundary walls of the hostel.
The injured were taken to the Sheikh Zayed Hospital first having suffered serious loss of blood and later were referred to Jinnah Hospital after normal treatment because of police case. A case has been registered with the local police, the statement claimed.
Meanwhile, PU Vice-Chancellor Mujahid Kamran held an emergency meeting of the deans and principals of colleges early Sunday morning to discuss the situation.
The VC also visited Hostel No 7 along with senior members of the administration and expressed sympathy with the injured students who were assured by him that the administration and the Punjab government would take all necessary steps for their safety and protection while exemplary punishment would be given to the miscreants and law breakers.
The students, in response to the VC’s address, assured him that they would not be deterred by a handful of undisciplined students who were disrupting the academic environment of the university because the overwhelming majority of the students community fully appreciated the efforts made by the administration regarding education.
It is pertinent to mention here that on Friday, a large number of students, especially those from the Philosophy Department, had taken out a rally against the IJT hooliganism. PU Resident Officer (RO-I) Javed Sami said the incident seemed to be a reaction by the IJT against the recent anti-IJT rally in which the students condemned hooliganism of its activists on the campus. He said the administration, after consulting the university’s legal advisor, would register a case against the IJT hooligans.
An IJT spokesman, however, denied the allegations and claimed the incident was staged by the PU administration when some IJT activists were visiting the fruit shop at the hostel. He termed the incident a clash among students of the Punjab University, alleging that the VC had instigated innocent students for the clash by patronising anti-IJT rallies at the university. He claimed that two Jamiat activists, including Faisal Ahmed and Ammar Hussain, were injured. In another development, dozens of activists of the National Student Federation (NSF), staging a demonstration on Sunday strongly protested against hooliganism by activists of the IJT at the Punjab University.
The demo was held outside the Lahore Press Club in which the participants chanted slogans against the IJT and demanded the government take serious notice of the incident.
NSF Lahore Secretary General Ali Raza led the demo and demanded that the IJT activists involved in thrashing innocent students and manhandling teachers should be expelled from the university. The news.
