Debate discouraged in Zia period’

LAHORE:December 31:THE concluding ceremony of a four-day media workshop, organised by the Unified Media Club (UMC), was held at Punjab University’s Institute of Communication Studies (ICS).

Addressing the ceremony, spokesperson Punjab government Senator Pervez Rasheed said that the debate culture from the academic institutes was discouraged in the dictatorship’s period of Zia-ul-Haq and it was changed to shrines, which resulted in the stoppage of academic development and also created extremism and intolerance in the society. He said there was dire need to promote debates in the academic institutes. Media-persons and politicians should promote courage to listen to each other’s views.

Talking to the ceremony participants, Dean of Social Sciences Prof Dr Muhammad Hafeez said that every person would have to play his role in the development of society. The government should patronise the system of research and think-tanks and provide sufficient funds. Out of 1600 think-tanks of the world, 1300 think-tanks are working for the USA. The government should formulate its policies from the universities’ researchers.

Speaking on the occasion, Unified Media Club President Muhammad Hassan said the UMC provided a platform to media students to facilitate training opportunities to perform their professional responsibilities.

He said the Club also organised debates to promote national integrity and harmony in the society. This four-day media workshop was on reporting, production and newsroom culture.
